Frist

There is a really neat family activity planned at the Frist for March 29 2012. It is called Art making in the Lobby. You will all be allowed to paint in the style of a chosen artists with instruction. Sounded like so much fun.

There is also a really nice exhibit of American Artists through May 6.

Art App

This year there is an art app for I pad and I pod users. The app is free. I submitted about 18-20 pieces of our students work. You will be able to see the art work with the students explanation about their piece when you download it. I noticed that none of the work is on yet but should be soon. Its a great app and it would be good for your children to look at what they are doing in Junior High.( LSSD art genius)

In the Art room we are beginning a study of the rainforest.

Fun facts about the rain forest.

1. 4 out of 5 of our medicines originate from the rainforest.

2. There is a type of bamboo there that grows up to 9 inches a day. (wouldn’t that be a  nightmare if that were your child)

3.There are more than 4000 species of butterflies in the rainforest.

4. A sloth moves so slow that moss actually grows on its fur.

5. Every 1 second a section of the rainforest the size of a football field is destroyed. WOW!!

Student teacher in Art

I have a student teacher from Cumberland. His name is Josh Crouch and he wil be at Coles Ferry until mid April. He is married with a little girl. He is doing a great job and has brought some really cool, new ideas to the classroom.

One of the second grade students told his classmates that “Mr. Josh is in training and we are training him. Mrs. Becky is invisible to us right now.” I loved that.

Sculpture

We have been working on a unit on sculpture. The fifth grade has created clay boxes which is a good example of functional art. The fourth grade has completedq free form bowls pressing lace, Burlap, netting, etc. into the bowls to make really cool textures. The third grade will be making fun fish and I will be discussing functional versus non functional artwork. The second grade will be making smaller bowls that will be in the shape of a dogwood bloom. First grade and kindergarten will be doing clay afTer spring break.

My student teacher has been introducing 3D paper cubes with abstract objeCts inside the cubes to 3rd,4th and 5 th grade. these are really cool. we chose this unit to coordinate with the classroom geometry lessons.

Christmas Decorations

Your children painted and decorated our school for the Holiday season. Please see the media section for photos of their handiwork. I am so proud of my students ability to create snowmen, trees, candy and mittens in 1 class and work as a team to accomplish a goal. Good job boys and girls.

Jan. painting

In the month of Jan. we will be studying color theory in all grades. Please send your child with a paint shirt if you do not want them to get paint on their clothes. The children will be creating their own colors, painting towns, studying architectural details and continue learning how to correctly handle, clean and care for materials in the Art room. If you are looking for your “inner child” come and paint with us!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Frist exhibit

The Frist is having an Egyptian coming October 7- January 8. I mentioned this in class and quite a few of the children were excited. The Frist is FREE for all school aged children and admission for an adult is fairly cheap( I think it is $15.00).The exhibit is coming to Nashville from Brooklyn. I thought this may be a fun thing to do for Fall break. Have a good break with your children.

New business

We are studying cave art and I am in need of cardboard boxes to put together to form a cave. I will be working on this over Labor Day weekend  to hopefully have cave art in the hall for open house. Please stop and look at your childrens’ “cave art” when you come next Thursday. Have a good afternoon

Winter the doplhin

In Art, 1 year ago we were painting mammals found in California. We discussed a dolphin who lost his tail fin in a fishing net. He has been rescued and is doing well. The dolphin’s name is Winter. There is a link on my web page for Winter.  A prosthetic tail has been designed to enable him to jump out of the water. This story has been turned into a MOVIE and it is coming out Sept. 23. This would be a great fall break treat as a family.
