  • Family Picnic at the Park – May 24
  • Summer Break Begins- May 25

Fun Day at Coles Ferry- Monday we will be participating in Coles Ferry’s Fun Day! This is a day we visit physical activity stations outdoors and build confidence as a team. We will do activities that include running, water, and whole body movement therefore it is extremely important to dress accordingly. This means NO flip flops, tennis shoes will be the best choice for this day. Please remember to apply sunscreen to your child’s skin if necessary. At the end of the day, we will visit the “Fire truck station” for some water play. You will need to make sure your child has on a swimsuit underneath their field day attire (one piece bathing suit for girls preferred). Lastly, make sure they have a change of dry clothing, which includes underwear, to change into once we return to school. This should be a great day! We would love for you to attend!

Talent Show and Tour of Coles Ferry- On May 22, we will be visiting Coles Ferry Elementary to watch the school Talent Show and tour the school. This opportunity will make the transition to “big school” a little easier for our Pre-K friends. On this day, we will eat lunch in the cafeteria, visit the art and library rooms, and visit a few Kindergarten classrooms. Please come with us if you can!

Picnic at the Park- May 24th (Thursday) we will be meeting at the Don Fox Park, not the classroom, for a morning outdoor fun and food with friends. We will meet at the park at 9:00 am and food will be served around 10:30. We will have hotdogs, fruit, and drinks for the whole family. Make sure to sign up in the classroom so we can plan :) If you do not plan on attending, please let me know so I can give your child their “end of the year” goodies on Wednesday.

Family Time- Summer Break begins May 25th! Have a safe, fun, and loving summer! I will miss you all very much! I LOVED this year’s students and families!!! :)

Tools of the Mind Class Update- As all of you know, our classroom has been using the Tools of the Mind Curriculum this year. This is a comprehensive learning guide that aids your child in literacy, mathematic, social, and motor skills. Now that we are so close to becoming Kindergarteners our days are jam packed with new and more challenging “Tools” activities. We are now writing letters, more in depth play plans, more partner lead activities, and much much more! It is amazing the progress our friends have made this year!

Pre-K and Kindergarten Registration- On May 3rd, Pre-K and Kindergarten Registration will be taking place at College Hills Church of Christ the times are 10:00 am until 6:00 pm. If you DID NOT turn in your child’s “registration information” in to me through your child’s “Orange Folder” you MUST attend registration on this day. We only have 3 families in class that will need to attend. I will write you a personal not if you DO NEED to attend. I will be present at registration and helping with the process, please write me a note, visit www.LSSD.org, or call me if you have further questions.

Trips and Things- Although it may be a few weeks away, I wanted to make you aware of several trips we will be making at the end of the year. May is a very busy month in Pre-K! May 21st we will be participating in “Fun Day” at Coles Ferry Elementary. This is similar to field day, please be mindful and dress your child in “comfortable” clothing for this day. May 22nd, we will be back at Coles Ferry Elementary for a school tour. On this day, we will be visiting Kindergarten classrooms, watching a Talent Show, and touring the Arts and Science classrooms. We will need chaperones on these trips… Please sign yourself up on your child’s upcoming Field Trip notices!

Family Time- This week I ask that you and your child read at least two books together. Fiction or Nonfiction, short or long- it truly doesn’t matter! Simply modeling a positive attitude towards literacy will work wonders! :)

Class Newsletter April 16th – April 23rd

Important Reminders for the Week of April 16- April 23

  • Letter of the Week “V”
  • Turn in Kindergarten Registration Packets- April 20
  • Make Believe Play Theme “Hospital” Begins
  • Turn in Pre-K Study Sheet- April 20

Please Turn In Kindergarten Registration Packet- As the Pre-K year is coming to a close, it is time to think about Kindergarten! The first step for a successful start to Kindergarten is to be registered correctly. Last Thursday, I sent home a packet with every student enclosing EVERYTHING to register your student correctly. Please send it in to me by April 20th (this Friday) so I can confirm that your child is registered. If you do completely fill out this packet you DO NOT have to attend registration on May 3rd.

Please Turn in Pre-K Effectiveness Study Sheet- This year our class was chosen along with one other class from LSSD to participate in the Tennessee Pre-K Effectiveness Study. To monitor your student’s progress in Kindergarten, I sent home a sheet asking for your signature and to identify your child’s school for Kindergarten. I have received very few of these. Please help me out by turning it in (along with your Kindergarten Registration) on or before April 20th.

Hospital Centers Open This Week- I am sure our little eager friends have been sharing with you their wealth of knowledge for the Make Believe Play Theme “Hospital”. This week those centers were open for business! I want to send a big THANK YOU to the families of Mckayla Owens and Jacob Rasinar for your help with “props” in our centers throughout this school year!

Family Time- Kindergarten is almost here! To better prepare your loved one for Kindergarten remind talk with them about it at home. Remind them that they will not be coming back to the Market Street Pre K, but will move on to an “elementary school”. Read books about school together and let you child speak openly about any fears they may secretly have about “big school” :)

Class Newsletter April 2 – April 6

Important Reminders for the Week of April 2 – April 6

  • Letter of the Week “T”
  • Visit Cumberland University for a tour- April 5
  • Good Friday (No School)- April 6

Cumberland University Tour- To promote higher education in young students, the Lebanon Special School District has requested that several grade levels visit Cumberland University for a tour and picnic. Pre-K was among the grade levels chosen to do so! Our class will be visiting the campus on Thursday April 5th from 8:30- 12:30. During this trip a Cumberland student will be our tour guide showing us all that college has to offer in the educational and sports departments. I will be sending home a “Field Trip Permission Slip” today. This is an official document of LSSD, it must be filled out in its entirety to attend this trip.

Bathroom Issues in Class- Our Pre-K friends have been having a challenging time communicating their need to use the restroom lately. We have talked in class about our “Bathroom Policy” (go anytime- but please ask first) and about how it is not shameful to use the restroom at school. Many students have had issues since coming back to school, not just one or twoJ Please help me talk with your child about going when needed. Also, please remember to send clothes just in case!

Easter Celebration- Coles Ferry Elementary has asked that we keep our Easter Celebrations this year academic based. Therefore, we will not have an “Easter Egg Hunt” or “party”. Instead, we will read Easter themed books, make Easter crafts, and have a special Easter snack. Thank you for understanding this change of events and rest assured we will have a great day!

Family Time- The weather is nice and I’m sure you can notice a difference in your child’s energy level! These are signs that “outside play” should begin to occur. Take a walk with your family or go outside to watch you child play. You may be so surprised how your child’s gross motor skills have increased during the school year! J

Class Newsletter March 5th – March 9th

Important Reminders for the Week of March 5- March 9

  • Letter of the Week “R”
  • No School Spring Break- March 12-23
  • Field Trip to Cumberland University- March 9
  • Parent Teacher Conferences- March 8

Spring Break- We have made it to Spring Break! Since January, I have seen so very much growth in your child academically and socially! They are all growing up so fast. To ensure that this progress continues, please talk with your child about the letters we have studied thus far (A-R) and you may want to spark up some conversation about our next center theme “Hospital”. Most of all, take this time to have fun and love on your family!

Health Information for Kindergarten Registration- We have received a notice from the school nurse urging families of Pre-K students to quickly make appointments for your child to get their Kindergarten Physicals and immunizations. These appointments “book up” quickly during the summer. Any questions about what may be needed for registration please come to Pre-K Family Night or contact Nurse Robin at Coles Ferry Elementary School.

Parent Teacher Conferences- We will have another round of Parent Teacher Conferences on March 8. There is a “sign up sheet” on the Parent Communication Board in our classroom. Please sign up if you have something we need to talk about. I understand that one of these times may not fit your schedule, please know that you may call me or set up another conference time if ever you have questions throughout the rest of the year!

Family Time- This week (and Spring Break) I want you to focus on being with each other. Although this time of the year can be so busy with work, sports, and community events- please don’t forget to spend quality time with your child :)

Class Newsletter February 27 – March 2

Important Reminders for the Week of February 27- March 2

  • Letter of the Week “Q”

Cumberland Work Student- This year we have been blessed to have two fabulous Cumberland University students to assist us in our classroom. During the Fall semester, you may remember, we had Miss Tana help out and go on our “home visits”. This semester we have Mr. Stephen helping out in the mornings. The program that enables Cumberland University students to work in our classroom is district wide and primarily with the Pre-K program. Many of these students are seeking an Education Degree themselves; therefore it is great on site practice. Let me know if you have any questions!

Health Information for Kindergarten Registration- As I mentioned in my last newsletter, it is time to get all “health” paperwork ready for Kindergarten! It is best to contact your child’s primary physician to receive a physical and immunizations. Due to high volume during this time, the Health Department may not be able to cover this. Please see me or contact Nurse Robin at Coles Ferry Elementary School for more information on what may be needed.

Sneezes and Sniffles- Our class has been frequented by the “sick bug” lately at our Market Street Pre-K! We have had several friends absent due to various illnesses. Please watch out for runny noses, vomiting, complaints of sore throat and diarrhea. Always remember, if your child has a fever he/she is too sick to be at school. Your child must be “fever-free” (without the aid of medication) for 24 hours before he/she can return to school. Please help me keep all of our Pre-K friends healthy!

Family Time- In our class, we are truly working on skill that will allow the children to create healthy interpersonal relationships now and in the future. I like to assist the children by “giving them the words to say”. For example, if someone takes a toy they wanted, I try to “give them the words” by telling them to ask their friend to share that toy. Practice “giving” your child kind and appropriate words to use with siblings, parents, and friends.

Classroom Newsletter February 20 – February 24

Important Reminders for the Week of February 20- February 24

  • Letter of the Week “P”
  • No School Monday (President’s Day)- February 20
  • Pre- K Family Night at Coles Ferry- February 23

Last Pre-K Family Night of the School Year- Our last Pre-K Family Night of the school year will be on February 23 at Coles Ferry Elementary School, 5:30 pm. This Family Night will be packed with fun and educational opportunities for all families! This night you will receive Kindergarten Registration information from the school nurse, find out more about our district wide Children’s Progress Assessment, and visit a few Kindergarten classrooms. Please join us for dinner, valuable information, and fun!

Sneezes and Sniffles- Our class has been frequented by the “sick bug” lately at our Market Street Pre-K! We have had several friends absent due to various illnesses. Your child must be “fever-free” (without the aid of medication) for 24 hours before he/she can return to school. Please help me keep all of our Pre-K friends healthy!

Family Time- For family time this week, my suggestion is to talk and model the behaviors of keeping yourself healthy. For example, covering your mouth and nose while sneezing and coughing, washing your hands after going to the restroom, and using hand sanitizer when soap and water are just not available. The example you set now will last a lifetime!

Class Newsletter February 6 – February 10

Important Reminders for the Week of February 6- February 10

  • Letter of the Week “N”
  • Begin our “Classroom Library” book exchange

Take Home Folders- By now you may have noticed that your child has a new “morning job”. In class, we are working towards taking responsibility for our actions and gaining independence. One way we are developing this is by placing our “Take Home Folders” in the black crate under the label “Take Home Folder”. Many of our Pre-K friends have been able to do this! Some of us still need a kind reminder each morning, please help us with that.

Classroom Library Book Exchange- In the Lebanon Special School District Pre-K we have been given a wonderful Classroom Library! This consists of books and activities for students and families to share. Starting February 6 (Monday), your child will select and bring home a book to read with you. The student will have until that Friday to read the book, finish the activity, and return the book. If the BOOK, ACTIVITY CARD, and PLASTIC BAG are not returned or are in poor condition upon return the student will not receive his/her report card at the end of the year. This is a policy that is in effect at all LSSD elementary schools; this is not simply a policy for Market Street Pre-K. If you have any questions about the Book Exchange Library, please contact me.

Awesome Job on Attendance- I want to thank you all for getting here on time!!! Last week, most of our families and students arrived on time! This starts our day off in the best way! Keep up the good work!

Family Time- I truly hope your family enjoys reading our Classroom Library books! There are very encouraging studies that show that students who get read to have a more expansive vocabulary and an increased interest in learning. Thank you for making an investment in your child’s future! :)

Class Newsletter January 30 – February 3

Important Reminders for the Week of January 30- February 3

* “M” is our Letter of the Week

Grocery Store Theme is Going Strong- We are in full swing with our Grocery Store Theme! The students are doing very well remembering the departments of Publix we saw and how they correlate with our centers. Please ask your child about what center at which they played as well as the roles they pretended. We are going to be working on appropriate vocabulary for each department this week.

Please Remember our Attendance Policy- Please be mindful of our morning arrival policies. We unlock our doors at 7:45. Arrival is from 7:45 until 8:00. Anyone arriving past 8:00 is counted as “Tardy”. Be aware that 5 tardies = 1 absence.

Be Sure to Check Out the Hallway- We are now displaying student work in our hallway! You will find a description of the Small Group activity the sample came from as well as randomly selected work. The children are SO happy to show off their hard work!

Family Time- In class we are still working on “taking turns” in a conversation. For example, allowing one person to speak while I listen and then having my turn to speak while the other person listens. This is a vital social skill for 4 and 5 year olds. Help your child practice this at home by taking time to speak with them about their day. First, tell them about your day and ask them to listen. Once you are finished say “What did you do today?” Try to encourage a deep and thought out answer :)

Class Newsletter January 23 – 27

Important Reminders for the Week of January 23 – January 27

* Begin Grocery Store Theme in Make Believe Play Centers

* Focus on the letter “L”

Grocery Store Make Believe Play- This week our Make Believe Play Centers will be open! The students are very excited to get back into the “play planning” and “make believe” part of our day. They have transformed from “Restaurants” into departments of a grocery store. This theme includes: a bakery, delivery truck, produce section, deli area, floral department, and check out station. As with the previous themes, students will assume roles and “act out” those roles during center time.

Winter Weather Apparel- As the weather gets colder the need for “dressing in layers” increases. Please help me in keeping your child comfortable this winter and remind them to wear coats, long sleeves, gloves, and other appropriate coverings when coming to school. Thanks for your help so far.

Next Pre-K Parent Night- I wanted to make everyone aware that the next Pre-K Parent/ Family night is scheduled for February 23 at Coles Ferry Elementary. Join us for a couple of hours of food and fun with your wonderful family!

Friday “Back Door” Pick Up- I know many of you have realized that every Friday we have been dismissing from the “back door ramp”. This is the new policy here at Market Street Pre-K and I wanted to thank all of you for making it a smooth transition! Keep picking those sweet children up at 1:30 at the “back door” on Fridays!

Family Time- Since our Grocery Store theme is brand new this week, I ask that you please talk with your child about “things you do in a grocery store”. This could include role of a customer, items in a grocery store, and names of grocery stores. I hope this leads to some fun conversations for everyone :)
