If you have a child that will be starting school in July, 2008, the following information may be helpful to you as you prepare your child for their first year in school! If you are unsure in which elementary school you are zoned, please call the school.

Kindergarten is such an important time in the life of your child. All of the Kindergarten teachers at Coles Ferry are committed to creating and providing an environment for your young child that will enhance their growth physically, mentally, socially, and academically. Your child will be assigned to a Kindergarten classroom in the fall, just before the school year begins. These assignments and placements are made randomly, without benefit of parental requests for a particular teacher.

State law requires your child to be 5 years old on or before September 30 to enter Kindergarten.

Upon entering Kindergarten, the following records are required:

There will be a supply list given to you whenever you pre-register your child for Kindergarten. These supplies include: one backpack, one box of 24 count Crayola crayons, three Elmer's glue sticks, two bottles of Elmer's school glue, one Crayola Classic Thick Markers (10 count), one package of 9x12 construction paper, one package of 12x18 construction paper, one box of quart size Ziplock bags, one box of gallon size Ziplock bags, one box of Kleenex, one bottle of waterless hand sanitizer with pump, one disinfecting antibacterial wipes (Clorox, Lysol, etc), two thick lined Expo brand white board markers. A large towel will also be needed for rest time. We prefer large towels rather than mats because storing the towels in our lockers is much easier and takes up much less room than a mat. Also, our floors are carpeted, so a large towel should be sufficient.

Kindergarten students' day will be from 7:50 a.m. until 1:50 p.m. During the first two weeks, your child will be assigned one day per week to stay with the kindergarten teachers in which he or she will complete readiness screenings and pre-kindergarten assessments. This will give the teachers an opportunity to get to know your child and help your child get to know his/her school. More information about this day will be given to you by your child's teacher at the appropriate time. At the end of the first week, your child's official teacher will call to let you know. Children will begin attending school daily the third week of school. Bus transportation is unavailable to kindergarten children. Your child should be picked out front at 1:50p.m. If you are unable to pick your child up, please make arrangements with a daycare provider to do so.

Your child's Kindergarten year will be filled with many exciting and challenging experiences! Before school starts, it would be very helpful if your child already knows their first and last name, their parents' names, their phone number, and their street address. You may want to encourage your child to form good habits like the following: learning to listen and follow directions, which is a necessity at school; putting their things away to foster responsibility; doing simple chores, which teaches reliability; dressing themselves (tying their shoelaces, fastening buckles, buttoning or zipping their clothes); and getting along with others, which will be so important in their school setting.

If you need additional information please call the school at 443-1946.

We look forward to welcoming you and your child into our Kindergarten program here at Coles Ferry!
